Fluorosis stains are caused by consuming too much fluoride, especially when you are younger. It typically occurs while the adult teeth are still below the surface. Children can consume too much fluoride from a variety of different sources. Some communities have too much fluoride added to the water, and when it is consumed, it can cause fluorosis stains. Also, children tend to use too much toothpaste and swallow it as well; this can cause the stains. Some people also take fluoride supplements. Fluorosis stains can occur if they are taken when they are not necessary.

What You Can Do for Fluorosis Stains

Fluorosis stains are best treated by an experienced cosmetic dentist. Your dentist will know the very best procedure for fluorosis stains depending on the severity of the stain.

For example, if you are trying to treat yellow stains, the culprit is typically not fluoride. You may be able to solve the stain by simple teeth whitening. On the other hand, if the stain is very dark, it may be caused by fluorosis and will only be made more visible by teeth bleaching. Since whitening whitens the entire tooth, and not just the portion that needs to be whitened most, it can make the contrast more visible.

If you suffer from fluorosis stains, you generally have two treatment options:

  • Dental BondingDental bonding can be used for lighter fluorosis stains by applying a thin layer of tooth-colored material to the front of the tooth to cover the stain. The process is simple, easy, and affordable.
  • Porcelain Veneers – For stains that are extremely pronounced, veneers may be a better choice. They are a thin ceramic shell that is placed on the front of the tooth to cover it completely. Veneers can change even the shape and color of your teeth if you want to. For example, you can transform your smile to a celebrity-quality smile in just a couple visits!
